EMDR Therapy for low self-esteem
What is EMDR Therapy?
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a 8-phase model of treatment that was originally developed by Dr Sharpiro in the late 1980s to alleviate the distress associated with negative life events. Today, EMDR Therapy has evolved into a highly effectively treatment for many mental health conditions, such as Depression, Anxiety and Phobias, Self-esteem issues, Trauma (school bully, car accidents, and toxic workplace), and relationship difficulties.
What happens during a negative life event, how it relates to low self-esteem?
Our brain has an innate capacity to adaptively process information and move toward mental wellbeing. However, when we experience a highly stressful event, the memory of this event may cause a disruption to this process, and this could lead to memory getting “stuck” and mental disorders.
We may experience nightmares, intrusive thoughts and anxiety, or get triggered easily by our partner, friends and family. Our thinking may be shaped by the traumatic or highly stressful experiences, and we may start to believe that “we are not good enough, I can’t trust anyone or I am not safe”. We may develop low self-esteem, which is characterized by incapability and worthlessness.
How does EMDR Therapy work?
EMDR Therapy uses bilateral stimulation – such as eye movements, and does two very important things. First, it resolves “stuck” memories, and second, it helps the brain process the experience successfully. It restores the brain’s natural healing process.
We will work together to identify how your past life events might have led to the development of low self-esteem. I will help you to develop confidence and resources, and when ready, I will guide you to safely “process” the negative life incident using bilateral stimulation. You don't need to prepare anything before you come and see me for EMDR Therapy, I will guide you through the whole process gently. Once the negative events are processed fully, you could start to experience the power of healthy self-esteem.
If we are working on a single event, it may take a few sessions; and if there are many experiences connected to the negative feelings or beliefs, it may take more sessions.
