3 negative consequences of low self-esteem

Do you struggle with imposter syndrome and never believe you are enough? Here are three negative consequences of low self-esteem and what you can do about it!

  • Fear

If we have low self-esteem, we are often controlled by fear. We are afraid of reality, of being inadequate, of facts about ourselves or others that we denied. We are afraid of the exposure of vulnerability, of the humiliation of failure, of success. Rather than to experience joy, we live to avoid pain.

  • Mental health issues

If we fail to develop healthy self-esteem, we are more vulnerable to developing mental health issues, such as anxiety and depression. More details below:

  • Excessive dependence on external validation

Self-esteem is what we think and feel about ourselves, not what others think or feel about me. We all want to have healthy self-esteem, but many of us try to generate self-esteem externally, which cannot and will never work. We can only pursue self-esteem from within.

We say to ourselves, if only I get more promotion, if only I have a partner, if only I have children, if only I have a house & car, if only I have another successful company - then I will really feel good about myself. The belief that making a positive impression on others will grant us good self-esteem is flawed, and that is how we stuck with the rat race.

What can we do about low self-esteem?

The ultimate source of self-esteem is from within – in what we do. We need to have a well-developed system of internal support to escape the rat race and to end the compulsive pursuit of external feedback & validation. “The attainment of this state is essential to what Nathaniel Branden understands as proper human maturity”.
